The best way for photographers to share photos with clients in India

Compare WhatsApp, Google Drive, transfer links and client galleries, and learn the best way for Indian photographers to share photos with clients.

The short answer: use a private client gallery that opens in a browser without an app, shows watermarked previews, lets the family choose photos, and releases full-quality files only after payment. WhatsApp and Drive are fine for quick sharing but weak for client work.

Sharing photos sounds simple until you deliver a wedding of 1,000+ images to a family of twelve, half of whom use budget Android phones. Here is how the common options compare for Indian photographers, and what to look for.

Option 1: WhatsApp

WhatsApp is where your clients already are, which is its strength. For a handful of teaser images on the day, it's perfect. For full delivery it fails: images are compressed, chats get buried, there is no selection workflow and anything sent can be forwarded instantly. Use WhatsApp to send the link to your gallery, not the photos themselves.

Option 2: Google Drive or Google Photos

Drive is reliable and familiar, and many Indian studios deliver this way. The problems appear around client work. Selection usually happens by screenshot or filename lists sent back over WhatsApp. Anyone with the link can typically download full-resolution files, so there is no easy way to show previews while holding finals until the balance is paid. There is no watermarking and no studio branding. Drive is excellent for your own backups and for families to keep a copy after delivery; it is less suited to the selection and payment stage. We compare this in detail in Google Drive for photographers.

Option 3: Transfer links

Services like WeTransfer move large files quickly but links expire, there is no gallery to browse and no selection. They work for sending finals to an album lab, not for clients.

Option 4: Pen drives and hard disks

Still common for final delivery, and some families like a physical copy. But drives get lost, can't be shared with relatives easily and offer nothing for selection. Many studios now combine an online gallery for selection with an optional drive for the final archive.

Option 5: A client gallery app

A dedicated client gallery is designed for the job. The questions to ask:

  • Does it open without an app? Families should be able to tap a link and view in a browser.
  • Is it private? Look for PIN or password access, lockout after wrong attempts, and the ability to change the PIN and end old sessions.
  • Can the family select together? A shared live selection saves hours of merging lists.
  • Are previews watermarked? Ideally added on the server, with full quality never reachable before release.
  • Can you control release? Full downloads should unlock when you decide - usually after payment.
  • Is it priced for India? Rupee pricing and GST invoices matter more than you'd think.
  • Does it work on slow networks? Lightweight previews make a real difference outside metros.

How Pikvaa approaches it

Pikvaa was built around these needs. You publish web-quality previews (around 0.4 MB each) with your watermark, and share one link and a 6-digit Client PIN on WhatsApp in separate messages. The family selects together on one live list, tags album priorities and submits by OTP. You record part-payments by UPI or cash, and when payments reach the approved price, finals unlock through a secure download gateway with up to five completed downloads. Pricing is per event in rupees, from ₹99 + GST for a 3 GB Lite pack and ₹999 + GST for a 40 GB wedding pack.

A sensible delivery workflow

  1. Send a few teasers on WhatsApp the day after the event.
  2. Publish the full preview gallery within your promised time, and share the link and PIN.
  3. Let the family select with a clear deadline.
  4. Collect the balance and record it.
  5. Release finals for download; suggest families keep a personal copy in Google Photos or Drive.

Common mistakes to avoid

Sending link and password in one message; sharing full-resolution files before payment; leaving selection without a deadline; and using a tool your clients find confusing. The best sharing method is the one your least technical client can use without calling you.
